Mat Maitland is a collage artist based in London. His surrealist-pop images and films have been commissioned by a wide range of clients including Louis Vuitton, Kenzo, Bulgari, Hunter, Tate Gallery, MAC Cosmetics, Nike, Printemps Paris and the English National Opera. His images have also been featured in various magazines including Interview, Self Service, Dazed Beauty, V, King Kong, Le Monde, Vogue Japan, L’Officiel and Vanity Fair.
“The artistic heir to Warholian tradition, recalibrated in the digital age, Mat Maitland’s work blurs the boundary between high and low culture. His collages are pop, playful, cerebral and surreal. They’re steeped in nostalgia in as much as they reference future worlds, as witty commentaries on contemporary culture.” (Dazed Beauty)
“In the midst of some research last week I came to Mat Maitland’s site and spent a blissful few minutes reminding myself of his brilliance. Mat pulls off one of the most difficult image-making tricks around, and what’s more he makes it look easy. There’s an awful lot of surrealist collage and far too often it feels like it’s trying too hard, but Mat knows exactly what works and what doesn’t and just as importantly he knows when to stop. So it’s no surprise that big-name clients are beating a path to his door.” (It’s Nice That)
Mat has also art directed and designed music campaigns and images for Michael Jackson, Prince, Beck, Goldfrapp, Basement Jaxx, Elton John, Kylie Minogue, Lana Del Rey, Marina & The Diamonds and Mark Ronson among many others. His music work can be viewed on the Big Active website.
