Mat Maitland is an English visual artist whose contemporary surrealist derived images are instantly recognisable and memorable. His interpretative individuality is full of enthralling pop complexities referring to fashion, old 80s and 90s magazines, music, paintings and films. The rich textures and multi-layered compositions frequently consist of disembodied body parts or animals, pianos, clouds and brightly coloured elements combined to form enchanting and magnetic images. His approach to image-making is refreshing, with an enthralling pop flavor and a long-lasting effect.
His many years of experience also cover the disciplines of art direction and graphics. As part of Big Active Design, where he is currently Creative Director, he has created powerful and innovative music campaigns for Beck (which won him a D&AD Yellow Pencil), Goldfrapp, Basement Jaxx, Michael Jackson, Mark Ronson, Das Pop and Sneaky Sound System among many others.
Mat lives and works in London.
